Chapter Six

“I hate to rush this.” Sean said once their party of four reached the limo. “But the park closes at eleven. We need to get going soon.”

So much for alone time with Bo. They’d talked a little, while walking around the building, but not about anything important. He asked about where she was from, what she did for a living, about Sarah and Sarah’s plans. Small talk. And awkward small talk at that. There was certainly no romance happening. They might as well have been strangers on a bus. It was almost a relief when Sarah and Sean had caught up with them. Emily wondered if Sarah had had any more luck getting her fling started than Emily had.

Emily, Bo, Sarah, and Sean piled into the back of the limo, but as soon as they got settled, Emily noticed Sarah was minus one earring.

“Crap. It must have fallen off by the pond.”

Before anyone could offer to help search, Bo was out of the limo. “I'm on it. Where were you standing?”

“Over by the walkway,” she said. “Near the…oh, it's easier to show you.”

Sarah joined Bo and in the blink of an eye, Emily was alone with Sean in the limo and once again, Bo Sarah were off by themselves. Emily didn’t even know why she was there. She should just go home now. Maybe she could spend the rest of the night clipping her toenails or counting the ceiling tiles in her hotel room. Either would've been more pleasurable than this. Instead of carrying out a Nashville fling, it was more like a Nashville failure.

“So, was your one-on-one time with Bo everything you thought it would be?”

“Go ahead. Gloat.” She crossed her arms and looked out the limo’s window.

“I’m not trying to gloat. I was really curious,” Sean said.

She glanced across the bench at him. He seemed sincere, his deep brown eyes warm and concerned. “No, definitely not what I expected.”

Emily had never found it difficult to get a guy’s attention. She was reasonably attractive, a practiced flirt. With an outgoing personality and a party girl attitude, she pretty much had as much male attention as she wanted. She did like being the center of attention, it was true. Maybe it was because Sarah got all the attention growing up—their dad had always gushed about how smart she was, at her good grades, how good she was at sports, how she’d been elected Student Council President. The only things Emily had been good at were making friends, getting boyfriends and partying.

But it seemed that with Bo, there was nothing she could do to get his attention. He was distracted and restless, though polite at all times. He was nothing like the smooth, charismatic Bo Branson she’d watched on stage a few hours earlier. Maybe he wasn't everything his PR firm had led her to believe. He wasn't the perfect man. He was a real man. And the reality wasn't nearly as good as the illusion.

“I’m sorry,” Sean said, leaning forward.
